Macam-macam is an awareness campaign aimed at introducing Indonesian cuisine to a wider audience. Launched in 2020, the campaign has been dedicated to showcasing stories about Indonesian meals, the country's rich culture, and its people. In 2023, Shila Sandi, the founder, invited me to create and publish a booklet centered around the campaign's theme. The booklet was then printed, saddle stitched, and given to participants who joined the Macam-macam Indoflavour Supper Club in London.

The booklet's content was divided into various parts: Indonesian food and influences from its islands, the signature ingredients used in Indonesian dishes, dining etiquette, popular dishes and beverages, Indonesian annual festivals that included feasts, and Indonesian restaurant recommendations in London.

Rather than relying heavily on illustrations, our approach involved using a combination of photographs and typography. We incorporated collage techniques to capture the diverse and savoury flavours derived from Indonesia food ingredients and its islands. We explored clipping masks and images and employed paper folds which allowed us to extend the content and introduce a tactile quality to the booklet. To give another unique character, we printed the cover using lithograph on GF Smith Gmund Bier paper.

Being an Indonesian, I realised that there was still little recognition of Indonesian food in Western cities. So, it was a source of great pride for me to contribute to the representation of Indonesian cuisine in print. Through the medium of print, I sought to leave a lasting impression that would resonate with readers, inviting them to explore the vibrant world of Indonesian cuisine with a newfound appreciation and curiosity. In essence, my involvement in this project became a meaningful endeavour to bridge the gap and bring the diverse and flavourful essence of Indonesian culinary to a global audience.
